i wanted to share the following images & video from Matt & Brittany’s wedding in New Orleans. all of these images were taken by myself, Jermaine & Derek. they occur in roughly chronological order, starting with the arrival in town on Thursday night, as the entire crew rolled into town for the event. the weekend got off to a great start with a night out in the quarter. the weekend slowly revved up on Friday with a casual day in the quarter & a delicious dinner at Bacco, & a night that ended on Frenchman Street. breakfast Saturday on Magazine Street at Slim Goodies, browsing the eclectic mix of stores in the rain, the big event at St. Louis Cathedral, a brass band & reception at Maison Dupuy, finishing of the night at the Fahy’s Irish Pub, before venturing out into the quarter, again. breakfast & beignets at Cafe Du Monde, then back on the road home. it was an incredibly fun weekend, good to see old friends & meet some new ones, all to celebrate Matt & Brittany’s wedding. Congratulations again!

a few days in the bay area

i got into SF early on Wednesday & met up with Justin. we walked around the Haight, strolled through Golden Gate Park, sampled some beers at Magnolia & saw the Painted Ladies. Justin’s roommates were kind enough to cook a delicious dinner of fish stew & some frozen grapefruit watermelon dessert. we started Thursday off early with a bagel & some juice, then headed across the bay to Berkeley to get in line for some posters. we barely managed to snag some Pollocks after a long wait. we met up with the rest of the crew. then on to the show…

i’m a little behind posting, but i’ve been on the road, or on a plane rather. the timing of everything was interesting as always. work obligations, visiting LA, the SF Bay Area crew, the Berkeley shows (Phish if your wondering), and some hunter thompson reading.

after a great evening in Raleigh, an interesting evening watching Chris & Dennis start their transfer when we got back to the hotel, and a first post show wrap-up over at livemusicblog, I headed down to Charlotte. i got a later start than planned, and unfortunately met some traffic. i do think i fared better than some folks. i got on lot early, and had some time to wander. the show kicked off as the sun was starting to set. it had to be blinding for the guys, staring into the sun, but they played on, and Fishman ended up in sunglasses all night. to close out two unexpected sets, that were all over the map, the You Enjoy Myself ended the evening with a vocal jam of Proud Mary & Get Back a capella, leading into A Day In The Life. enjoyed the beatles, what can i say. as soon as the show ended, i booked for the car. i made it out of the lot quickly and headed for Alpharetta. it was a long haul and the bacon egg & cheese on wheat at waffle house was necessary, and delicious. i checked into the hampton at 4AM & crashed. until tomorrow…

its been a few days. the dust has settled, and i have recouped i guess. i did a brief post show wrap-up for each show over at livemusicblog while justin was at high sierra. after the show we booked it back to the hotel, and chris & dennis started transferring the show. after a brief listen, i went back to do a post. the whole trip was a marathon. having listened to every night of the first leg before these shows, i can honestly say the band finished strong, and left it all on the stage. there has been plenty of write ups, break downs, and criticism, dissections, both good and bad. this probably won’t change your mind, but that’s not what i’m trying to do. listen to the music for yourself. enjoy it. that’s what its all about…

a night at alabama theater with my morning jacket

where to start. its hard to beat certain shows at the alabama theater. its an architecturally stunning venue. its a shame they don’t book more shows, and better bands for the ones they do (hint, hint.) we were treated to a great, long night of music. Preservation Hall Jazz Band kicked things off. it was an engaging short set. Jim James sat in for 2 songs, and that got everyone riled up. this was only the 2nd mmj show i have seen, and my first indoors, and it did not disappoint. the lighting throughout was incredible, and the song selection kept people interested and the energy up. i can’t remember the last time i have seen a band literally pour themselves out on stage. the set clocked in at almost 2 hours, and never let up. jim’s story about bribing the security guard at Vulcan to watch the sun rise really made you feel like they were excited to be in town. the cape & the towel however, left me a little confused. security at the venue wasn’t too strict about cameras, but i tried to be discrete, inevitably catching a few head shots along the way. PHJB joined the band onstage for the end of the encore. watching the 12 members of these two bands crammed onstage enjoying themselves left smiles on everyone’s faces. catch them if you can, but in the meantime, check out the videos below.

the weekend kicked off with a crawfish boil in gabe & rob’s backyard. our resident cajuns, derek & james did things right. we had some fresh crawfish fedexed in straight from louisiana. we did 2 boils, one crawfish, one shrimp. the boils contained a little of everything, corn, potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, artichokes, onions, and lots of spicy seasoning. needless to say, we ate really well on a friday evening. the weather was perfect, but got a little chilly late. cue the bonfire.

saturday, the weather again was perfect. the beer was cold. a great day at the track. we ended the day with a bus ride back to the car. notice the mullet in front of us on the bus? sunday we got a later start, as we rounded up the crew to head back to the track. we managed to score a sponsor parking pass which really came in handy. after a long walk, and a short golf cart ride (thanks paul), we sat up with the APR Racing folks at their buses, and watched the first half of the Indy Grand Prix race. we finished the race in the shade near turns 1-3. another perfect day weather wise, and fun all around. helio castroneves won the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. looking forward to next year. whose got my tickets? also, if you have never checked out the museum, definitely something not to miss, especially if you like motorcycles.

a musical history lesson

backing up a few weeks, after several strange days of snowy weather, toubab krewe came through town on a cold friday night. african music & some deep south influenced jams aren’t your typical friday night offering in birmingham. it got off to a late start, and ended much later than expected. i don’t think anyone left disappointed. it was one of the best crowds i have seen at zydeco in a long time. maybe that says something about the bands i go see there, or maybe birmingham just hasn’t clued in yet. either way, it was fun to be at zydeco this particular evening. i managed to drag mike out, and we met up with the vegas crew. taylor was kind enough to tape, as usual. between myself & mike we ended up with quite a large amount of video. unfortunately i am still battling with the low light pictures & the settings on this camera. maybe i will figure it out sooner or later. anyway, check out the videos, and if you haven’t caught these guys, be sure to next time they are close by. definitely worth it. you can check out more of toubab videos here

i caught trey anastasio & the classic tab (trey anastasio band) at the tabernacle. the band was on fire. trey was the happiest i have seen him, of all the solo shows i have seen over the years. its hard not to have fun when the band is all smiles ear to ear for 3 plus hours. we arrived at the venue about 20 minutes before doors. jay, jermaine, bp & i secured a spot almost at the rail, in front of ray’s keyboard. while folks poured in, the entire taping crew got setup & ready for the marathon, thanks as always for the tapes, guys & girls. the first set was nonstop energy, from start to finish. Mozambique was one of my favorites. trey introduced natalie cressman, and the crowd went wild before tearing into it. she wore the ever popular “a laser pointer does not make you chris kuroda” tshirt for the first set. did i mention she can play the trombone incredibly well. after the first set, i moved to the back for a break, checking out each level in the tabernacle. on the whole, an incredibly fun evening. i am a little disappointed in my photos. i was really struggling with the auto-focus. maybe its time for that DSLR. using a camera with no completely manual settings has been a struggle. as usual the videos turned out good i think. although i couldn’t hold it up anymore & cut during Wilson. somehow i think the photos do the night justice though. bright, colorful, happy, and sometimes a little fuzzy around the edges. sounds just about right.

hmm… ok where to start. its been almost 3 months since halloween. all the music boards were completely inundated with Festival 8 coverage shortly thereafter. i have had plenty of time to go through photos & collect my thoughts, but its still quite hard to describe. the last phish festival i attended was Coventry, although incredibly fun & an unforgettable adventure, it was musically disastrous. on so many levels Festival 8 was the complete antithesis of Coventry. perfect venue, perfect weather, beautiful music, gorgeous scenery, happy people, friends new & old. i flew to san diego alone, and set out to meet up with the crew. on thursday evening i met up with justin, pete, kochan, adam, tim & john in the parking lot at chili’s, and we made the 30 minute drive to indio. we got our campsite set up, and retired relatively early. friday was a wonderful day. plenty of time to check out the scene before the first set. enjoyed the music, and the burble. saturday started off nicely with an afternoon set. we recieved our playbills & learned that they would be playing rolling stones exile on main street, with sharon jones! as if that wasn’t enough, i managed to get both pollock prints for the weekend. the musical costume set lived up to the hype, and it stands up well on tape. i got my second loving cup for the year, but with sharon jones. thanks to all the tapers for capturing this weekend. apparently it was also filmed in 3D for a release sometime this year. sunday started early with coffee & 8 shaped donuts, courtesy of the band, thanks guys, as if the music wasn’t enough. then we were treated to a first ever acoustic set. everyone sitting down to watch the start of the set was amazing to witness. the torches erupting during the harry hood jam seemed appropriate. i can still feel the heat watching the video. unfortunately, it all came to an end on monday morning, and everyone departed. parts of it still seem like a dream, a really really good one. the first video i have included is courtesy of michael marantz. its a collage of thousands of of still photos. i think it really captures the weekend, at least visually in lots of ways. a couple of the other photos were provided by pete & michael & are noted accordingly. the main image is michael’s but i couldn’t bring myself to ruin the image with the watermark, its just too good. thanks for those guys. other than the costume photo, somehow john managed to escape all my photos. so if any of you guys have one that captures johnny fiasco, send it on. this weekend was a blast. i’ll see you all out there. hopefully sooner rather than later. happy phishing.
